Unlocking 50 years of history
The University of Bradford is continuing its 50th Anniversary Celebrations with the opening of a time capsule that was locked 25 years ago.
The capsule which was locked by former Vice-Chancellor Professor David Johns in 1991 contains items that were chosen at the time by members of staff at the University. These include Harold Wilson’s pipe, a picture of HRH The Prince of Wales presenting a certificate to David Sharpe and a copy of the Bradford Telegraph and Argus newspaper.
The University will be celebrating the opening of the time capsule with staff and students at the event next week, exactly 25 years on from when it was locked, where guests will be invited to view the objects and also interact with 3D scans of a select few, thanks to Tom Sparrow from Bradford Visualisation team.
Professor Bill McCarthy, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Operations) will be opening the event and welcoming special guests, including Alison Cullingford from the University’s special collections department, to say a few words about the capsule and its items.
Vice-Chancellor, Professor Brian Cantor, said: “This event provides us with an opportunity to reflect on our rich past, and look forward to an exciting future, as we continue to develop as one of the world's great technology universities. Many of our staff will remember the capsule being locked and it’s a great chance for friends and colleagues to come together and share their memories of the University.”
