Education leader and Bradford alumna to make history at Wellow House School
A University of Bradford alumna is to make history by being appointed as the first female head at a leading independent school in Newark, Nottinghamshire, UK.
Mrs Matthews, who will start her new role at Wellow House in September, will succeed Mr Peter Cook. The head since 2004, Mr Cook is set to retire at the end of the school year.
Mrs Matthews said: “Wellow is exactly the school I would have liked to send my children to.
“I don’t want to change anything that’s good about Wellow, but my aim is to bring education into the 21st Century.
“It is a small enough school to have a family feel but big enough to hold its own.”
Mrs Matthews will join Wellow House from Christ Church Cathedral School, Oxford, where she was the first female deputy head in 500 years and also head of English.
She has specialist experience of teaching children with behavioural, emotional and learning support needs. Mrs Matthews has a degree in management studies and French, from the University of Bradford, and a Masters in education from Oxford Brooks University.
