University of Bradford honours eight in award ceremonies

Journalist Orla Guerin MBE and Paralympic gold medallist Hannah Cockroft MBE are among those being honoured at degree ceremonies at the University of Bradford later this month.

Figures from the worlds of health, engineering, education, and media will be presented with honorary degrees to recognise their valuable accomplishments and contributions to the local, national and international communities.

Receiving honorary degrees from the University are:

• Diana Chambers will receive a Doctorate of Education for her contribution to secondary and further education, as well as her service to the University of Bradford as Pro-Chancellor.
• Jacqueline Ann Gerrard will be made Doctor of the University for her role in supporting midwives and student midwives across England and shaping national policy.
• Hannah Cockroft MBE will receive a Doctorate from the University for her achievements in athletic, winning two gold medals at the London 2012 Paralympics Games.
• Mark Fletcher will receive a Doctorate of Engineering for his work in engineering design and water management.
• Professor Jim Al-Khalili OBE will receive a Doctorate of Science for his success as a science communicator in broadcast media and publishing.
• Dean Royles will receive a Doctorate from the University for his practice in Human Resources and his support of domestic violence victims.
• Orla Guerin will receive a Doctorate from the University for her bravery whilst reporting on the Kosovo conflict as an international correspondent for the BBC.
• Alex Brummer will receive a Doctorate from the University for his good-standing as one of the UK’s leading financial journalists and commentators.

Honorary graduates will receive their awards during degree ceremonies taking place in the University’s Great Hall on the 16, 17 and 18 of July. They will receive their awards from the University’s Vice Chancellor, Brian Cantor.

Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Brian Cantor, said “The University of Bradford’s eight honorary graduates represent some of the very best practice in their chosen fields. They are true inspirations, not only for their work, but for their contributions to society as a whole. I am honoured to welcome them to the University of Bradford and hope their accomplishments inspire our graduates to strive for greatness too.”
