The University of Bradford shortlisted for Green Gown Award
The University has been shortlisted in the student engagement category of the Green Gown Awards for their 'Our Green Energy Challenge' project. This behavioural change project has driven utility reductions and slashed carbon emissions in the Green, the University's student village.
The project has achieved a 10% reduction in Electricity & Gas use and a 5% reduction in water use against 12/13 figures.
The project is unique to The Green with the students taking local ownership and different departments working together to develop a partnership around sustainability. Some of the initiatives included students using the vegetable patches at The Green and the catering team sending a personal chef to cook a two-course meal for the house which saved the most water.
The Awards are the most prestigious recognition of sustainability excellence within the tertiary education sector, as well as the environmental sector.
Clive Wilson, Director of Estates and Facilities at the University, said: “We are delighted to be shortlisted for the 2014 Green Gown awards. This is the eighth time running we have reached the finals and in recent years we have won four awards with a further four receiving highly commended recognition.
“This year’s submission recognises the hard work the environmental team have done to engage the University in behavioural change programmes to reduce our carbon emissions. Over the past nine years this has been significant with a total reduction of 31% on our carbon output.”
This year the awards received 180 applications across 14 categories. The University now has to complete another application form before the winners are announced at an awards ceremony in November.
The Green Gown Awards Ceremony 2014 will be held on Monday 3 November at the Whitworth Hall, The University of Manchester.
