Henna
BSc (Hons) Computer Science
Henna is currently in her second year at the University of Bradford, pursuing a BSc in Computer Science.
Originally from Bradford herself, she chose to enrol at Bradford after attending both an Open Day and an Experience Day. During her first year, she embarked on a four-week placement at a marketing firm in Spain.
This is her story.
The University of Bradford stood out due to its strong course offerings, and being from Bradford made the choice even clearer.
Changing focus
“I studied triple science, healthcare and criminology for my A levels here in my hometown of Bradford.”
“I first applied to study Biomedical Sciences because the sciences were my favourite subjects at school and college.
"However, two weeks after I submitted my UCAS application to universities including Bradford, I realised that Biomedical Sciences wasn't for me. I emailed the University of Bradford to ask if I could change course.
“This led to me exploring my interest in Computer Science, thanks to its versatility and the useful skills it provides that are required in most industries.
"Although Computer Science wasn’t my original choice, I’m happy to be studying it. I’ve always had a keen interest in anything to do with computers as they play such a huge role in our daily lives."
Computer Science is a versatile degree that teaches you a broad range of skills that can be transferred to various industries.
Developing skills
"Problem-solving, attention to detail and logical thinking are all skills that I’m developing thanks to my course."
"Although I previously taught myself to code at home, the course structure accommodates all levels of knowledge and experience.
"The initial three weeks of my first year covered the basics and one of our first modules was ‘The Fundamentals of Programming’, which made sure that everyone had a good foundation to tackle more complex topics.
“In the second year, our studies have delved deeper. The combination of practical and theoretical work through lectures and laboratory sessions has been particularly enjoyable.
"In the lab we’re given opportunities to build software and solve problems, complemented by regular demonstrations.”
Internship abroad
"One significant opportunity that I’m grateful for is the four-week internship in my first year."
"We had a choice between Morocco, Greece, Turkey, Mexico or Spain, and I decided that the opportunity in Valencia, Spain best suited me.
"I spent four weeks with a small marketing company where I had the opportunity to work on a range of projects and build software.
"The internship was funded by the University, which makes it a lot more accessible. This included six Spanish lessons for free each week which helped me settle into life with a Spanish family more quickly."
I definitely recommend attending the Open Day and Experience Day to anyone who is considering going to university.
Experience and Open Days
“The Experience Day gave me a taste of the theory and application of lab work.”
"Before my course began, I attended an Experience Day organised by the University of Bradford to gain exposure to Computer Science.
"Though I was already committed to the subject, the Experience Day solidified my decision. I observed tutors in action, engaged in lab work and coding and met fellow students, easing my transition into the course.
"Bradford’s Open Day was also very beneficial as it provided information about on-campus job opportunities.
"Speaking to a student ambassador in Computer Science inspired me to become one myself, a decision influenced by my Open Day experience."
Postgraduate options
"I’m already thinking about my options after my undergraduate degree."
"At the moment I’m drawn to a career in the Royal Air Force, specifically in cyber security.
"The Royal Air Force presents prestigious opportunities, offering travel experiences and transferable skills for future employment.
"You can either join the Royal Air Force with an undergraduate degree, or stay in education to secure a postgraduate degree.
"At the moment I’m leaning towards obtaining a Master's and PhD in cyber security."
I’ve really enjoyed my time at the University so far. It’s great to be near my family, the tutors are all very friendly and approachable, and I’ve made a lot of friends.
