Cory
BSc (Hons) Game Design and Development
From a young age, Cory had a passion for games and always dreamed of developing them himself. After studying creative media in college, his natural next step was the BSc (Hons) Game Design and Development course at the University of Bradford.
This is his story.
Gaming is one of my passions. I’ve always been interested in game design and development.
I chose Bradford
"I was fortunate to study creative media at college, a course specifically tailored to teach game design and development."
"Thanks to my passion and hard work, and despite the challenges of navigating the COVID-19 pandemic while studying, I completed the course with the highest possible grade.
"While I considered various universities in Yorkshire, I ultimately chose Bradford for its strong course credentials and proximity to my hometown.
"Bradford’s Centre for Visual Computing, with facilities that include a motion capture suite and high-end technical equipment and devices, was especially appealing.
"The course covers various areas of game design, including graphic design, game programming and animation. I knew this would help me develop a broad, useful skillset for future job opportunities and career progression."
My time at Bradford has been incredibly rewarding.
Knowledgeable, experienced lecturers
"In the first year, we started with an introduction to programming and modelling."
"Although I had some prior knowledge from my course at college, I learned so many new techniques.
"The lecturers, with their extensive knowledge and experience, have been inspiring.
"One of the modules I really enjoyed was Storytelling and Narrative, which allowed me to explore my passion for creating stories, characters and worlds.
"Working on group projects, such as developing a game story from scratch, has significantly boosted my confidence and leadership skills."
Gaining a deeper insight
"Another module which piqued my interest was Game Design, Programming and Development. This gave us a deeper insight into the game design process."
"We had to create a 2D game using a popular cross-platform engine called Unity. This module taught us essential programming skills, including creating character assets and animation within a game."
Studying abroad in America has been a life-changing experience.
Placement year at the University of Nebraska, USA
"During my second year, the University's study abroad team gave us talks and presentations about placement years."
"We didn’t have to go on a placement year, but I thought it was an incredible opportunity, and it turned out to be the experience of a lifetime.
"I chose to study abroad rather than accept a job in the UK. I knew that living in a different country would teach me different perspectives and skills that wouldn’t be as accessible outside of university.
"I applied to study in the USA, as this is one of the main hubs in the game design world.
"I was accepted by the University of Nebraska at Omaha, which offered solid game design courses and additional subjects I was interested in, such as board game design, animation and artwork."
The University of Bradford’s study abroad team was incredibly supportive, ensuring I felt prepared before I left.
American adventure
"In Omaha, I took Game Design Studio as my main module which simulated the game design experience."
"We had full creative freedom to develop our own games, including playtesting and receiving critiques from our course mates to improve them. This enhanced skills I already had, like time management, and taught me new ones.
"Not only was the studying experience incredible, but I also made a lot of new friends through the local gaming club. This gave me opportunities to travel to other states across the US, including Missouri, Iowa and Kansas. I would never have done this if I hadn’t studied abroad."
University friendships
"Through studying in Bradford, I have had the chance to make some amazing friends through my course."
"They have helped me create some incredible memories and moments that I am forever thankful for.
"Talking, learning and working alongside these people have greatly enhanced my experience."
Future plans
"After graduating I would love to work in the gaming industry, with the ultimate goal of setting up my own game design company."
"My time at Bradford has taught me to strive to upskill myself and surpass my previous achievements.
"While I haven’t decided whether I’d like to move abroad or stay in the UK, thanks to my time in America I would be interested in moving abroad if the opportunity presented itself to work internationally."
