Journey to university
"Before joining Bradford, I knew it was the time in my life to do something for myself and I was determined to train as a midwife, no matter how competitive it was.
"I studied Access to Health Science Professions at Leeds City College and this was by far one of the most nervewracking experiences of my life, going back to education after having three children and being six months pregnant!
"I handed in my first assignment and was so surprised by the feedback I received and what I could do. The course itself was very intense but it prepared me academically for university."
Choosing Bradford
"I had many interviews at different universities, but Bradford really stuck out to me.
"The Adult Learner Team are unbelievably helpful and it instantly felt like one big family. The support for Adult Learners is amazing (as we all overthink everything) and the University seems more family friendly than others. Staff respond to emails almost instantly, so you have less time to worry.
"There has obviously been a strange start to this year, but the University and all the staff have pulled out all the stops to ensure the course is delivered to a high standard and the staff make it clear they want you to succeed. After the open day and meeting the team, I knew I was Team Bradford from day one!"
Before receiving offers from universities, I was so nervous applying and had little confidence academically, but it soon became apparent that they love adult learners. My advice to any Adult Learner going back into education would be to pursue your dreams, be well prepared, expect to work hard and the results will follow.
Support for me
"On my Access Course, Bradford came in to help us with our personal statements, offering support and advice.
"It was obvious the staff really cared about their prospective students. I contacted Caroline Priestley (Adult Learner Adviser) several times, worrying about whether I'd be offered a place even though I had offers from other universities, because I knew Bradford would offer support throughout the degree.
"Caroline explained the whole process to me and kept me sane whilst waiting for that offer. Nothing was ever too much for her."
Making the adjustment
"Before studying at university, I worked for my sister at her antique shop and I wondered how I'd adjust to university life.
"I had so many questions such as 'would I be the oldest in my cohort?', 'am I capable?' or 'can I afford it?'.
"The University is full of Adult Learners, all with different backgrounds and stories which makes socialising so fun and interesting. I have already made a whole group of new friends and we are ready to support each other on our journey.
"I was so surprised with the funding available from student finance, the learning support fund and the University itself. It is without a doubt worth looking into."
