Study Sociology and Criminology
Studying with us
Studying with us means that students have the flexibility and opportunity to develop their own areas of interest within Sociology and Criminology, respectively.
Our innovative teaching hinges on ensuring our curricula are not only relevant in a rapidly changing world but are deeply meaningful to our students and the communities to which they belong and value.
At the heart of our teaching approach, we aim to equip students with the skills to explore concepts and ideas that align with their own lived experiences. Our teaching embraces a commitment to excellence in teaching through enabling students to apply theories, concepts and existing research to every day and real-world contexts.

My favourite part about learning is definitely learning about myself, my identity, my background, how it shaped me, giving me the opportunity to just develop as a person.
Karolina Lydka, BA (Hons) Sociology
PhD
Doctoral research in the Social Sciences requires passion, dedication, and a drive to conduct your own research around an area of interest. Undertaking a PhD with Sociology and Criminology, respectively, means that you will be a part of a research community that aims to produce research that not only has a positive impact on a local level, but also a global level.
Throughout the process, you will be supported by an expert supervisory team, not only from within Sociology and Criminology, but also cross faculty collaborations with experts from Pease and International Development, Psychology, Health, and Law. You will also have access to PGR lounge for peer-support.
The support from my supervisory team has been invaluable and I feel welcomed and encouraged to lead my research to my full potential.

Preparing for your career
Choosing to study with our Sociology and Criminology department means that you will be prepared for a career within welfare, education, and local community services. There will also be career opportunities within the criminal justice sector, or in the wider field of managing offending behaviour.
Links with industry
The Sociology and Criminology department also has strong links with industry, business, and related socio-legal professions through its existing work placement provision.
For example, over a period exceeding ten years, we have developed relationships with professional bodies including the Crown Prosecution Service, the Police, Local Authorities, NGOs and a wide range of charities and voluntary and community organisations both at a local and national level.
This enables our students to work in multiple professional sectors and settings. Our Work Placement module, for example, supports students in their final year project and offers practical guidance and support related to their future employment prospects.
Additionally, the interdisciplinary nature of our programmes also prepares students for Postgraduate studies, or Postgraduate Research in a number of disciplines, if they chose to do so.
Alumni
Your relationship with Bradford doesn’t end at graduation as you join a community of more than 140,000 alumni spanning over 170 countries.

There are also many ways for Bradford alumni to get involved through volunteering to promote the University, inspire current students, and support our research and development projects.
