Eating well
Good nutrition is essential during childhood, as it is a time of rapid growth, development and activity. This is also a vital time for healthy tooth development and the prevention of decay. General eating habits and patterns are formed in the first few years of life.
At the University of Bradford nursery, we provide a nutritious and well-balanced healthy menu that caters for all dietary requirements.
Our main meal at lunchtime is provided by the catering team at the University. All other meals such as breakfast and snacks, are ordered in and prepared at the Nursery by staff who are fully qualified in food safety, hygiene, and allergy awareness.
All the meat at the nursery is halal.

Meal routines
All children are encouraged to self-serve from an early age with support and guidance from the adults within the room.
We offer breakfast upon arrival from 07.30 until approximately 08.30. We offer a range of cereals for children to choose from.
Morning snack is then served around 09.00, which consists of toast and fruit.
Lunch arrives around 11.30 and is served to the children at 11.45, lunch menus are based on a 4-week rota which is reviewed regularly.
Our afternoon snack is served at around 15.00. This is also based on a 4-week rota and provides a light, healthy mid-afternoon snack for the children who attend full-day or afternoon sessions.
Children can freely access their breakfast, morning and afternoon snacks without interrupting their learning and play experiences.
Oral health
Oral Health plays an integral part in your child’s overall health, wellbeing, and development. We have a named Oral Health Champion, Claire Nicholls, who actively promotes oral health activities across the setting, such as:
- Promotion of accessing dental services upon entry to the setting
- Activities within the setting; dentist role-play, tooth brushing activities, reading material, stories, group time discussions, healthy food tasting, experiments and more
- Parental workshops and information; to raise parental awareness on current issues and strategies to support oral health within the home
- Regular review of the food menus, including portion sizes and food group variations
