Dr Jacobo Elies Gomez

Dr Elies studied Pharmacy and then undertook a PhD in Pharmacology at the University of Santiago de Compostela, Spain. In 2009, he moved to the University of Leeds to join Professor Chris Peers’ group at the Leeds Institute of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Medicine as a postdoctoral researcher.
His group investigates the molecular mechanisms involved in the development of cardiovascular diseases (arrhythmias, heart failure), as well as the impact of skin autoimmune diseases (such as scleroderma, lupus and psoriasis) in the cardiovascular system.
Dr Elies’s current projects focus on:
- in vitro organotypic co-cultures for the study of blood vessel formation, hypoxia, oxidative stress and calcium signalling in lung and skin microvasculature. His main interest resides in cellular communication and how its dysregulation can affect the microvasculature function in health and disease.
- cardiac arrhythmias and regulation of cardiac function by environmental factors. He investigates the molecular basis of cardiac arrhythmias induced by pollutant gases using a range of electrophysiological techniques.
He is part of the Cardiovascular Research Group at the University and Vice-director of the Society of Spanish Researchers in the UK (Yorkshire).
