Professor of Pharmacognosy

Expertise: Drugs from natural products

Professor Wright has taught pharmacognosy - the study of drugs isolated from natural sources, including plants, microbes, animal tissues and minerals - for more than 20 years. His interest began in traditional medicines while working as a hospital pharmacist in India in the early 1980s.
He believes a knowledge of herbal medicines and natural products is necessary for a practising pharmacist and broadened the teaching of pharmacognosy at Bradford School of Pharmacy to reflect that. 
Professor Wright’s research has mainly focused on investigating traditional medicines for the treatment of malaria. In collaboration with Bradford’s Institute for Cancer Research (ICT), he has also investigated plants including marine algae (seaweeds) for their potential to yield anticancer compounds. Professor Wright is also interested in anti-TB natural products.
