Professor Phil Coates
Professor of Polymer Engineering
Expertise: Advanced materials, polymers, healthcare technology
Professor Coates is director of the internationally recognised Polymer Interdisciplinary Research Centre (IRC), a 4,500 square metre laboratory for cutting edge computer modelling, analysis and control and process monitoring of advanced materials for a range of sectors, including healthcare, pharmaceuticals and automotive.
Professor Coates has received more than £50m in grants and contracts from UK Government and industry, including more than 150 companies in the USA, Europe, the Middle East, China and Australia.
He has built a strong relationship with China and directs the Science Bridges China programme, a government sponsored collaboration with over 20 Chinese universities, focused on advanced materials for healthcare technology. In 2012, he co-founded the UK-China Advanced Materials Research Institute with Professor Li Guangxian, senior Vice President of Sichuan University.
Professor Coates is also involved in research in India, particularly with the leading Institute for Chemical Technology, in Mumbai, and the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) National Chemical Laboratory.
He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and was Pro Vice Chancellor for Research & Knowledge Transfer at Bradford from 2004 to 2011.
