Diwali dance brings students together

A traditional Punjabi drum and dance act to mark the Hindu Diwali festival took place at the University of Bradford on Wednesday November 8.

The performance included drumming by self-taught Gursimran Virdee, from Bradford, and dancing by Leeds-based Bollywood dancer and creative artist Deeba Amin (also known as MizDiva).

Diwali is the Hindu festival of lights, marked on Sunday November 12 -  it symbolises the spiritual victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance.

University of Bradford Student Life manager Sarah Jones said: “This is the first of numerous calendar events in our academic year and has been organised in conjunction with the Indian Society, with is part of our Students Union.”

Organiser and honorary graduate Dr Manoj Joshi, DL, MBE, said: “This event is bringing students together from all walks of life, from all religions. Events like these not only help the university meet its equality, diversity and inclusion goals, they bring everyone together.”
