The University of Bradford hosted the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) Automobile Division Yorkshire Centre's Formula Student Regional Showcase, in what is now the event's 4th year

Local teams from the Universities of Bradford, Leeds, Huddersfield, Hull, Sheffield and Sunderland gave expertly delivered technical presentations on the innovative features of their new Formula Student racing cars together with their aims and aspirations for the year ahead.

Formula Student is Europe's most established educational engineering competition. Backed by industry and high-profile engineers such Patron, Ross Brawn OBE, the competition aims to develop enterprising and innovative young engineers and encourage more young people to take up a career in engineering.

A variety of concepts were covered ranging from detailed aerodynamic packages, spaceframe designs, a modified engine sump, bespoke suspension dampers, full 3D printed wings, novel anti-roll system and revised suspension designs. There was also significant focus on knowledge retention with at one end of the spectrum the steep learning curve of the new Bradford team compared to the challenges faced by the longer standing teams of design stability vs the desire for innovation.

The evening was rounded off with the display of four of the vehicles in the University’s Automotive Laboratory – an event which generated a huge amount of interest from the audience.
