Mid Yorkshire Hospitals & University of Bradford join forces to reduce nursing deficit
Mid Yorkshire Hospitals and the University of Bradford open their new School of Nursing & Healthcare Leadership at Dewsbury and District Hospital.
Professor Jane Cummings, Chief Nursing Officer for England will officially open the school by unveiling a plaque at the Hospital. The new facilities comprise of a brand new team based learning suite, with state-of-the-art technology to enable students to engage in learning through problem solving and reflection, both individually and in teams; dedicated seminar rooms for focused, interactive learning activities; a bespoke Clinical Skills Suite and Laboratory.
The school will boost nursing recruitment for The Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust and widening degree course participation in the local area. The first cohort of students started in April 2018.
The University was asked by The Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust to support greater nursing recruitment for the Trust. As a result, the University agreed to offer its existing pre-registration nursing programme to students at Dewsbury, with the Trust offering Registered Nurse posts to students on successful completion of the programme.
David Melia, Director of Nursing and Quality at The Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust, said: “I am immensely proud that our Trust and the University of Bradford are coming together to establish this new School of Nursing & Healthcare Leadership. I know that having the School based within the hospital will really give the students an excellent education. Their experiences will be enhanced by being able to receive the majority of their academic education within a fully working hospital – it will bring their studies to life. Nursing is a wonderful profession and we need to have people with different backgrounds and experiences joining us.”
, Head of Nursing and Healthcare Leadership at the University, said: “We are very proud to be part of a unique collaboration with Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust whereby we can offer our BSc (Hons) Nursing (Adult) programme on-site at Dewsbury and District Hospital. This is an exciting collaboration where a Higher Education Institution has teamed up with an NHS Trust to address the deficit in nursing recruitment locally. It is an excellent opportunity for the University and the Trust to work closely together to provide quality education and clinical experience for local people who wish to enter the nursing profession. We are delighted that Prof Jane Cummings is opening our new facilities and hope that this will inspire future generations to start their nursing career with us.”
