University of Bradford in UK first for sport physiotherapy education
The University of Bradford is to launch the UK's first integrated master's qualification in physiotherapy.
Teaching for the four-year integrated Master's in Physiotherapy specialising in Sport and Exercise Medicine begins this September.
The new degree programme has been designed for students wishing to develop more advanced knowledge and skills, specifically relevant to sport and exercise medicine, in addition to the wider scope of physiotherapy practice.
Approved by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), the degree was commended by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) as an innovative programme, meeting the needs of contemporary practice.
It is a significant advantage to have a master’s level qualification specialising in sport and exercise physiotherapy to gain employment in professional and elite sport.
Graduates will gain a professional masters level qualification in physiotherapy - MPhysiotherapy (Sport and Exercise Medicine) - having had the opportunity to undertake a range of clinical placements in various sport and exercise settings as well as studying the core areas of physiotherapy.
The professional specialisation will allow direct employment into a wide range of settings, such as NHS, private enterprise and elite sport, as well as the many other possibilities available to physiotherapy graduates.
University of Bradford lecturer and programme lead for MPhysiotherapy (Sport and Exercise Medicine), Claire Graham, said: “As the first Integrated Masters in Physiotherapy Specialising in Sport and Exercise Medicine in the country, our four-year programme has been developed specifically to enhance graduate employability as a physiotherapist in the sport and exercise medicine sector.
“This degree will open the door to a range of additional career opportunities as a physiotherapist in the sport, exercise and health and wellbeing sectors.”
