Stonehenge experts feature at this year's Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition

Published:

Experts from the University of Bradford and partners from across the world will present their ground-breaking research on Stonehenge at this year's Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition.

Led by Professor Vince Gaffney and Dr Chris Gaffney from Bradford’s School of Archaeological Sciences, the group will put on a spectacular range of interactive activities around their research on Stonehenge.

Stonehenge is amongst the most iconic of archaeological monuments in the world. Everyone recognises the distinctive shape of the monument whilst the mysterious nature of Stonehenge attracts endless speculation about what it was and why it was there. The Stonehenge Hidden Landscapes project is about the excitement of real exploration – using dramatic technology and visualisations it is recreating the landscape of Stonehenge in a manner never seen previously.

The exhibit will include a state of the art geophysical and remote sensing survey of the area around Stonehenge at an unprecedented scale and resolution using multiple sensors and large arrays.

Professor Vince Gaffney, said: “It is a great honour to showcase our research at the Summer Science Exhibition and is a fantastic opportunity to show young and old the significance of our findings.

“This is archaeology and technological applications at speed! The results are startling. Dozens of new monuments have been discovered (and recreated) that are linked to Stonehenge and these include classes of ritual monuments that were previously unknown.

“The ability to reveal detail of archaeological monuments that have never previously seen and the application of agent-based modelling to re-create the ceremonial processions leading to the monument, is fundamentally changing our understanding of Stonehenge.”

The Summer Science Exhibition is an annual display of the most exciting cutting-edge science and technology in the UK. This week-long festival features 22 exhibits from the forefront of innovation. Visitors can meet the scientists, try some of the hands-on activities or attend some inspiring talks and events. The event is free and runs 30 June - 5 July 2015, London.

The team includes Dr Chris Gaffney, Head of Archaeological Sciences, University of Bradford; Professor Vincent Gaffney, Anniversary Chair in Archaeology, University of Bradford; Professor Kai Bongs, University of Birmingham; Dr Eugene Ch’ng, University of Nottingham ;Dr Richard Bates, St Andrews University; Professor Wolfgang Neubauer, Ludwig Boltzmann Institute.
