Bradford Pathology contributes to British Science Festival
Dr Samar Betmouni, Director of Clinical Pathology (Faculty of Life Sciences) and Deputy Director of Digital Health Enterprise Zone, DHEZ (University of Bradford), organised and contributed to the DHEZ Digital Health Reception held as part of the British Science Festival 2015 at the University of Bradford.
The event provided an overview of digital healthcare. Speakers presented their experience of sharing clinical data and demonstrated practical ways in which healthcare can be delivered using digital technology. The importance of widening digital participation and removing barriers to digital health was also discussed. The event schedule can be Bradford Pathology BSF event schedule (pdf).
Attendees included members of the public, academics and several digital health-related Small & Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs). The event also featured a demonstration of the role of Digital Autopsy by iGene (sponsors of the British Science Festival 2015).
presented a talk on Digital Pathology which included a live demonstration of the Philips Digital Pathology Solution. The audience were taken through the journey of a biopsy from its arrival in the laboratory to diagnosis. A comparison was made between the current diagnostic tool – the microscope, and the potential for digital technology to facilitate consultations and enhance collaboration and research.
Commenting on the event, Dr Betmouni said: "This event has provided a fantastic overview of the potential for digital health to contribute to the improvement of service delivery to patients and carers. It emphasised the challenges we face, as users and providers of healthcare, in using and incorporating digital technologies to improve the experience and delivery of health services in the future. The significant challenges include promoting new technology adoption amongst the workforce, and for health service users ensuring that any barriers to participation are removed."
