Double success for BSc (Hons) Dementia Studies graduate
Since completing his degree in Dementia Studies in 2012, former student rep Terry Wilford has not just gained promotion to a managerial post, but has also entered into local politics, campaigning for the rights of older people.
Terry’s first achievement came in 2013 when he applied successfully for the position of day centre manager at the MHA-run Bay Tree Resource Centre, in Moor Allerton, Leeds, where he had worked as a senior carer for over 9 years.
Then in May 2014 he was elected to Leeds City Council as a Green Party councillor. His maiden speech in Council concerned social isolation and inclusion for older people who are living with dementia, and he is now involved in the Council’s Health and Well-Being Portfolio, with an expert role related to dementia.
Terry says: “Bay Tree has always been known for its ethos of social inclusion and interaction, but I believe that due to my studies at Bradford I now have the experience and confidence to address issues on behalf of older people who are living with dementia more widely. I believe my studies have contributed to my leadership skills as well as my concept of dementia care.”
