Repeating a year of studies

If you have studied previously and have either had to drop out or repeat a year of your course due to compelling personal reasons, then you may be able to apply to get an extra year of funding from your student finance provider.

Common reasons for applying for an extra year include:

  • mental health
  • illness
  • bereavement
  • pregnancy
  • a caring responsibility

This list does not include all acceptable reasons. Each application is looked at on an individual basis. However, applications cannot be based on:

  • financial hardship
  • not liking your course
  • reasons within your control

Applying for Compelling Personal Reasons

Write a letter to your student finance provider.

Tell them you are applying for 'compelling personal reasons'. Remember to quote your customer reference number. In your letter, explain:

  • What happened
  • When it happened
  • Why this prevented you from progressing with your course

Send any supporting evidence you have, this could be:

  • Crime reference number
  • Letter from a Counsellor
  • Letter from your GP
  • Letter from your Personal Academic Tutor
  • Medical evidence

Send your letter and evidence to:
