Jacques' story

Jacques Okoth is a career police officer with over thirteen years progressive experience in the National Police Service in Kenya. He joined the service in the lowest cadre rising to the level of a police inspector who's roles are categorised as a station commander or platoon commander. As a station commander, he has been involved in the development of a programme of contemporary adult learning principles to assist in the delivery of relevant content to police officers.

As a station head, he is tasked with the development of security plans to tackle crime by use of situation assessment, intelligence collection and verification, and also the development and maintenance of key relationships with the community to foster better policing relations. He is also an active participant in the establishment of a well structured system for reporting sexual gender based violence and, in collaboration with other law enforcement agencies, NGO's, and other stakeholders, developed and implemented measures to eradicate sexual and gender based violence.

As a platoon commander, he has been involved in the evaluation, design and leading operations involving the proliferation of small arms and light weapons among communities in the north of the country.

He is a Geneva Centre for Security Policy fellow and has taken part in various capacity building courses touching on human rights, UN field operations, security management, and defilement investigations.
