Career Booster Schedule
Welcome to the Faculty’s award-winning Career Booster Week for Monday 21 October to Friday 25 October 2024. Students from the Faculty of Management, Law and Social Sciences can pick any combination of workshops to attend during the week.
When selecting sessions note any pre-requisite skills required and profile of students the session is recommended for.
Skills-based workshops
For October 2024 Career Booster week we have focused our schedule to provide students across the Faculty of Management, Law and Social Sciences the opportunity to attend skills-based workshops. Each of these workshops aim to give you the opportunity to develop skills which employers have identified as a skills gap in the current job market.
Throughout the week in addition to these skills-based workshops we have a range of soft skills sessions. These sessions aim to provide the skills and knowledge required to attain your desired graduate role and succeed in your future career.
This workshop is recommended for...
The schedule on offer has been tailored to provide you with the best opportunity to develop your skill set. As such we have asked our speakers for each session to identify who the 'target audience' are for their sessions.
Underneath each session you will see a line which states 'This workshop is recommended for'. For each session we have identified the target audience and will look to prioritise attendance to students who meet the specified audience.
Please note: Whilst we have identified the target audience for each session this does not prevent you from registering for a place. We will consider all registrations and will not guarantee a place on a specific session but if you apply and there is space available you may be offered a place on the session.
Capped Sessions
For many of the sessions on offer the speaker has asked us to limit the number of spaces available to that session. This has been done for a number of reasons but largely to ensure the best experience possible for both yourselves as students and the speaker.
We have specified under each session if they are capped to a limited number. For each session we will work on a first-come first-served basis to provide places to the target audience students who registered first. Should spaces be freed we will reach out to offer a place.
If you have any further questions please reach out to the Career Booster Team at [email protected].

Details of the session: ’Follow your passion’ “…is no help…Many successful people are passionate, but often their passion developed alongside their success, rather than coming first.” - Benjamin Todd.
Even before the pandemic research showed that of those entering the workplace the top priority of millennials was “being in a role you’re passionate about” (44%), beating “money at 42%” (Department 26, 2018).
Following the pandemic, the narrative surrounding “The Great Resignation” remains that people are quitting their jobs to “follow their passion” (Forbes.com, 2022) with research being quoted which suggests that “passion” results in higher performance.
However - Financial security is top of the list in a poll of “milestones” conducted by Comparethemarket in 2022, and whilst a huge rise in pay ie from $40,000 (approx. £34,119) to $80,000 (approx. £68,238) does reveal an increase in life satisfaction, the jump in positive affect (happiness) flatlines around $55,000 (approx. £46913) suggesting that beyond this amount, money had no impact on satisfaction.
Key Takeaways:
- While it may be true that “money doesn’t buy happiness” – a “bottom line standard” is required over “passion” (or happiness) alone
- While “ikigai” can give us some help, older psychological theories to help us thrive professionally may be of greater help
- Practical tools to find professional satisfaction

Details of the session: As technology automates more routine work, the World Economic Forum has predicted that higher level cognitive skills will become increasingly important to career success. Digital habits also impact our capability to learn and study. Yet, we are often surrounded by a digitally distracted environment without putting in place the conditions to be able to focus. At work this results in working outside core hours to ‘get work done’, in study this makes it harder to learn. Join this talk to sharpen your focus in a digital age and:
- See how digital distraction impacts on your focus, creativity and strategic thought
- Dispel the myth of multitasking and discover how to work more productivity
- Learn the three different modes of work and how you can use these to increase focus and creativity
- Take the first steps to give you back more time in your day, learn more effectively, and be at your best throughout the day
- Learn lifelong skills for working smarter, not harder
As technology automates more routine tasks, the skills required for success in the workplace are changing. Deep focus is essential for high performance, yet up to 28% of our working day is lost through digital distractions. This means that there are enormous benefits to learning how to recognise distractions and why they arise, use skilful modes of working to better structure the working day, and find a balance that rewards focus, creativity, and strategic thinking. Students have a golden opportunity to embed these skills at the beginning of their careers for lifelong improvements to their cognitive skills, focus, and productivity that they will need to thrive in the future of work.
