Newspapers are an essential resource for the study of modern history, politics and more. We have runs of several important titles.

Bradford Pioneer

The Bradford Pioneer is an essential source for the history of radical Bradford. J. B. Priestley wrote for it; Barbara Castle's father edited it. The newspaper was issued under the auspices of Bradford Independent Labour Party, Trades Council and Workers' Municipal Federation.

The 1913 volume contains several early articles by J. B. Priestley, his Round the Hearth series. Other volumes cover the First World War, the influence of the trades unions (particularly in the West Riding textile industries), local and national activities of the Labour Party, the early days of the social services and the socialist movement in local government. This set was presented to the University Library by Miss A. Pickles in 1971.

Citizen

Issued by the London Co-operative Society Political Committee. A single-sheet monthly newspaper, with separate editions for different constituencies (e.g. Wood Green and North Tottenham Citizen), and election specials for parliamentary and local elections. The constituencies are mostly in Greater London. The election numbers have the local election agent as publisher. This set received from the Co-operative Society in Manchester thanks to then Chancellor of the University and Prime Minister, Harold Wilson.

The Co-operative News: and Journal of Associated Industry

The Co-operative News is the official journal of the UK co-operative movement. Founded in 1871, the paper is one of the longest-established weekly newspapers in Britain and may be the oldest, democratically-owned newspaper in the world. It reports on trading, political and society affairs and provides a forum for discussing co-operative topics. The growth of the newspaper closely mirrored the expansion of the co-operative movement in Britain and it contributed to the spread of the co-operative ideal internationally. Published at Manchester by the Co-operative Press. This set received from the Co-operative Society as above.

Dates held: New series 1924, 1928, 1930, 1938, 1939, 1946, 1953, 1954, 1955, 1956, 1958, 1961, 1963, 1965.
