The Campaign

The Campaign against Military Research on Campus (CAMROC) was launched in May 1986 to expose the increase in military research carried out by staff and students in higher education. CAMROC consisted of peace and anti-nuclear groups, concerned individuals and student unions. The campaign also sought more openness about military-related contracts and a transfer of resources to non-military research. Much of the work involved collecting and collating publicly-available information on research contracts, in conjunction with the British Society for Social Responsibility in Science. In 1989 CAMROC merged with Student CND.

The Archive

One of the Commonweal Archives, this was donated to Commonweal Collection in 2003 by a founder member of CAMROC. The Archive gives a detailed picture of military research in higher education at the time, and how the Campaign tackled the issue. It includes extensive correspondence with universities, UK and US governments, manufacturers, other peace groups, student groups, and individuals. Reports, campaigning materials, publicity and press coverage show how CAMROC members shared their discoveries.

The Archive was catalogued as part of the PaxCat Project, with support from the National Cataloguing Grants Programme for Archives.
