International Conference On Artificial Intelligence & Human Rights

This conference is being held in partnership with School of Law Bennet University (The Times Group) Greater Noida, India and School of Law University of Bradford.

Concept Note:

Emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) are redefining legal frameworks and setting new interpretations of traditional legal knowledge. The ability of machines to imitate human reasoning and display independent thinking has seen the rise of AI as a tool to create new horizons in the legal field. The deployment of AI in fields such as justice delivery, policing, intellectual creations, commercial endeavors and other society-defining sectors bears implications for rights, duties and obligations. This has also limited the AI discourse to the susceptibility of interpretations seeking to find a defining place for AI in scholarship, albeit seeking conceptual clarity to this paradigm shifting technology. There is no authoritative work in jurisprudence that takes AI into account as an equal factor in the scheme of rights, duties and dispensation of justice. As legal jurisprudence seeks to address this unprecedented situation, the judicial precedent has already begun to emerge, interpreting the place of AI in the context of human rights. The decisions in South Africa and Australia, recognising creatorship rights of AI are critical developments in this area. On the other hand, AI is increasingly discussed in the context of an object through which human rights are infringed - from rights to privacy, surveillance, racial bias to broader aspects of discrimination. There are also grey areas concerning human rights and state interests, and aspects of democracy, independence and civil liberties in the context of rights in a digital age. Other non-state actors’ interest (such as tech companies), responsibility and approaches to the design to AI are equally important. These matters specifically extend to policy making, establishment of normative frameworks, judicial development and notably, scholarly interpretations. Against this backdrop, the Centre for Human Rights, School of Law, Bennett University (India) in collaboration with the School of Law, University of Bradford (United Kingdom) invites research abstracts for the international conference on the contemporary area of Artificial Intelligence & Human Rights. The aim of this inaugural conference is to explore the intersection between AI and human rights in the broad context of rights, duties and obligations. The venue of the conference will be Bennett University and foreign delegates will be allowed to present remotely through online mode. The submissions are expected to be centered around but not limited to the themes mentioned below:
