Nursing Studies
We are one of the top Universities to offer Nursing. As a nurse, you will face challenges every day. Nursing is a challenging profession, both mentally and physically, which carries a great deal of responsibility. Our Nursing simulation equipment and clinical wards allow students to learn the art and science of the Nursing profession in a safe and relaxed environment. This programme adheres to the new Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) education standards.
The aim of this programme is to prepare you with all the knowledge, clinical skills and attributes you will need to meet the challenges of being a nurse in the changing context of healthcare and to succeed in the modern National Health Service.
Facilities
Our Faculty of Health Studies campus is modern and and houses specialist innovate equipment and innovative facilities that simulate the real life situations and incidents medical personnel may come across. The resources at Health Studies gives students valuable hands-on practical experience in a risk free environment that will benefit them when they are working in the Health Services.
We have a variety of teaching and clinical rooms, including those with state-art computerised facilities. We have a family of computer controlled Patient simulator manikins, which can breathe, sweat, pulses, speak, blinking, chest rise, cyanosis, choke, tremble and cry like real-life patients. These can be controlled by tutors, facilitators, technical staff wirelessly via computer. cameras and iPads are available to provide live play and playback for assessment and debrief, feedback to students and observers.
The Adult Simulation Suite is one of the speciality teaching rooms in the Faculty of Health Studies.
This room contains a SimMan 3G, a mannequin which can cry, bleed, convulse, go into cardiac arrest and can simulate any number of other actions that humans may engage in when their bodies are malfunctioning.
Features include:
Convulsions
Degrees of seizures and convulsions can be created from minor effect through to a full convulsion through the instructor mode.
Bleeding and Wounds
Wound models can be connected to an internal blood reservoir which will bleed both from arterial and venous vessels. When connected to the simulator's physiological modeling, SimMan 3G will react appropriately to treatment.
Wireless Monitor
As part of the complete wireless simulation solution, the wireless monitor enables students to observe the patient simulator's vital signs whilst moving around freely during teaching sessions.
Drug & Event Recognition
The new and advanced drug recognition system allows students to administer drugs simultaneously to SimMan3G. This system registers the amount, speed and type of drug administered automatically and applies the appropriate physiological responses.
Eye Signs
SimMan 3G's eye functions include pupillary responses to light, blinks at slow, normal and fast rates, winks and open, partially open and closed reactions.
Sound Booth and Recording System
The Adult Simulation Suite also incorporates a sound booth with one way mirrored glass so that students can be observed whilst carrying out procedures.
There is also a 24/7 video recording system (SMOTS) in the room which can be used to film students and then used to review the findings.
The footage can be relayed live to anywhere in the university, and other groups can interact with the students who are working in this room.
The Child Simulation Suite is a specialist teaching room, used mainly by Children's nursing students.
This room contains a SimNewB mannequin.
The SimNewB is a computer controlled manikin which replicates a new born baby. It can be programmed to be a limp new-born with no vital signs, or a moving, crying, vigorous new-born, and it has an umbilicus that can be assessed, cut and catheterized for IV access.
The SimNewB manikin has life-like traits, a realistic airway and breathing functions, and will provide nursing students with true to life clinical feedback through its computer system.
“The SimNewB moves, cries and its lips go blue, just like the real thing. Having an accurate anatomical representation of a full-term, female baby enhances the learning experience in terms of patient care."
Within the Child Simulation Suite there are also a number of other manikins and models to practise various clinical skills including:
- Bathing
- Bed and cot making
- Feeding
- Basic life support
- Bandaging
There is also a 24/7 video recording system (SMOTS) in the room which can be used to film students and then used to review the findings. The footage can be relayed live to anywhere in the university, and other groups can interact with the students who are working in this room.
Our two clinical wards are specifically designed to give the look and feel of a hospital environment. The rooms are furnished with patients' beds, lockers, chairs, sinks and curtains as well as audio-visual equipment, internet and a teaching area.
A wide range of training aids and equipment are available in these rooms including:
- Catheterisation, intramuscular and enema training aids
- Skeletons
- Adult resuscitation mannequins
- Electrocardiograph machine
- Defibrillator
- Dinamaps electronic blood pressure machine
These practice wards have been developed to allow students to learn the art and science of their chosen profession in a safe and relaxed environment.
Students currently use the wards to learn skills such as:
- Bed making
- Bed bathing
- Eating and drinking
- Elimination
- Adult basic life support
- Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation
- Observational skills and physiological measurement including, temperature, pulse and blood pressure
- Urinary catheterisation and catheter care
- Injection technique
- Medicine administration
- Intravenous fluid replacement therapy
- Asepsis
The second ward has moving and handling equipment with hoists including an overhead hoist and handling aids. There is also a full computer system, audio-visual equipment, a smartboard and SMOTS.
The wet lab is a teaching room which used for up to 20 students, to teach a range of clinical skills from hand washing in sterile conditions to venepuncture and cannulation on training arms.
Students can also learn how to do a urinalysis test on the most up to date machines. This room is equipped with computer and audio visual equipment as well as a smartboard.
