Aaliyah Nurgat
Project Assistant for Graduate Workforce Bradford
Please can you start by introducing yourself and explaining your current role?
My name’s Aaliyah and I am the Project Assistant for Graduate Workforce Bradford (GWB). The aim of the project is to reduce the unemployment rate of BAME graduates from the University of Bradford. My role entails admin, communication tasks, and assisting in the organisation of events.
What inspired/motivated you to apply for this role?
As a student and member of the BAME community, I think projects like GWB are a great way to engage and encourage us in our ability to succeed. The project itself inspired me and so I applied to be a part of it.
How would you describe your journey of finding a job?
My journey of finding a job has been relatively easy due to the help I have received from GWB. I applied for the role as a student and have now gained a full-time job after graduating.
Tell us about how you got into the job and what the application process was like?
I came into my current role as a student ambassador, working part-time along with my studies. After my exams I was then offered a full-time temporary role on the project as a Clerical Assistant. I initially applied by sending my CV and cover letter via Handshake (University jobs board) after seeing the advertisement for the role on LinkedIn. I was then given an interview where I had to answer questions and prepare a presentation.
Did you face any challenges in your career journey so far?
As a recent graduate I have faced rejection from job applications which can be challenging, however, each experience can be an opportunity to learn. Many jobs are very competitive so trying to make yourself stand out can be difficult, but with more work and interview experience, it became a lot easier.

Were you always interested in attending university? Why did you choose the University of Bradford?
I always had the intention of studying at university and gaining a degree. I chose Bradford because it was close to me, and it provided the course that I wanted to study.
What did you study at the University of Bradford? What made you choose that course?
I studied a degree in Economics due to my interest in the subject and the variety of job prospects that it offers.
How did the University of Bradford/Career Service support and guide you?
The careers service has been a huge help for me by sending emails of current job vacancies as well as posting job opportunities on social media.
Why do you think it is important to get work experience whilst studying at university?
Gaining work experience whilst studying at university is very beneficial. I learnt a lot of practical skills whilst I was on placement that I would not have gained from my university course alone. Having experience makes it a lot easier to gain a career after graduating because of this.
