Bradford Futures Fund update 2022/23
The Bradford Futures Fund aims to help undergraduate students facing the biggest challenges in coming to and remaining at university. Since the Bradford Futures Fund was launched, our supporters have donated more than £159,000, and seven students were awarded the first-ever scholarships in 2021/22.
This scholarship programme, awarding £1,000 each year to recipients, was vital. The number of students seeking extra money because of financial problems doubled in a quarter of UK universities in 2020/21 (source: BBC), and we were no exception – applications to our hardship fund increased by 291%. More than 50% of our students come from low-income backgrounds and 43% come from BD postcodes, and we know that Bradford as a city district is in the top 5% in England in terms of deprivation.
Although we are delighted to have awarded the first seven scholarships and have been heartened to hear their stories and the impact of that support, these recipients only represented 15% of the eligible applications. We are determined to expand the number of students we are able to help.
Additionally, the cost of living crisis is affecting everyone, including our students. With inflation at 9.9% (ONS, August 2022) heading into the new academic year, it is even harder for students to afford to continue studying. The Student Money Survey 2021 by Save the Student! showed 74% of the average student’s monthly budget goes on rent, groceries, bills, and transport – which have all increased in the past year. Recognising this, with your support, we are ready to respond by increasing the annual amount awarded to £1,500.

This scholarship has helped me to overcome some of the challenges of studying at university while having multiple sclerosis, and it has assisted me in achieving my goal of becoming an occupational therapist. I would like to say thank you very much to those who have supported this scholarship, I am really surprised and overwhelmed to have received this.
