Bonolo Bonita Phinius
I am Bonolo Bonita Phinius, currently studying an MSc Medical Biosciences at the University of Bradford as a 2018/2019 Chevening Scholarship recipient.
I hold a BSc (Biological Sciences) degree from the University of Botswana and my current interests are in the field of biomedical research with a focus on HIV and co infections particularly Hepatitis B virus. Through my work as a researcher I have grown to have a passion for capacity building through which young scientists can be empowered to be of outstanding repute. To that effect I have had the opportunity to share my skills and knowledge to undergraduate students from my country through mentoring them in their final year projects.
Outside the laboratory, I am classical music enthusiast and I form part of the founding members of Gaborone Philharmonic Voices, a youth community choir founded in 2011, in Botswana. This has established and encouraged musical talents of Batswana and has exposed some to international stages, such as the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth games. This forum has immensely contributed to my leadership skills as I was part of the Executive Committee.
I strongly believe that studying in the UK through the Chevening scholarship will add to my personal development through experiencing different cultures as I engage with people in a global platform. The Chevening scholarship also awards me opportunity to advance my knowledge to enhance research capacity back in my country. In addition, this gives me a stepping stone to pursue doctoral studies.
