Gideon graduated from our innovative Master's programme in 2020. He is now working as a Junior Connections Project Designer.
A fantastic experience
"I chose to come to Bradford because of the Smart Grids and Energy Systems course content. It’s focused on the challenges in power systems due to the decentralisation, digitalisation and decarbonisation of the energy sector.
"We were pioneering students on this course and from a general perspective it was a fantastic experience. It was challenging in the beginning, but the programme leader and staff were very supportive."
My favourite memory from my time on the course is when industrial experts visited us to share their knowledge.
Gaining knowledge and industrial experience
"I gained broad knowledge in distribution network planning and operations among other areas of the smart grid – this helps me understand the day-to-day activities of distribution network operators (DNOs).
"Also, I did my dissertation at the International Energy Research Centre (IERC), Ireland, through the support of the programme leader, Dr Geev Mokryani. This helped me gain industrial experience which enriched my CV.
"After graduation, I was recruited on a part-time basis at the University of Bradford as a Research Project Officer, under the supervision and management of Dr Geev Mokryani. I worked on a project called Pi-CREST (Planning Integration and Control of Mini-grids with Renewable and Energy Storage), funded by Innovate UK. This has also helped me achieve my career goals.
"During this project, I received a lot of support from the programme leader and the other amazing staff in terms of managing industrial projects, that also helped me to secure my current job at one of the UK's DNOs."
My new job role
"I work as Junior Connections Project Designer for UK Power Networks in Crawley. I produce designs, quotations and work packs for new customer connections and diversions.
"I chose this job because of my passion for connections at the distribution level, especially the integration of low carbon technologies (LCTs)."
Job hunting in a pandemic
"I was looking for jobs in the power system sector, especially DNOs such as ENWL, UK Power Networks, WPD and Northern Power Grid, among others.
"I also looked at consultancies, companies dealing with solar and battery systems, and utility companies.
"I visited the careers sections of company websites and submitted my applications. I also registered with some recruitment agencies, who linked me up with further companies."
"My advice is to prepare a good covering letter and CV. You can get them checked at the Careers and Employability Services at the University before you start applying.
"You can also create an alert with companies of interest to make sure you get a notification email when there are new job opportunities.
"During the second semester, while you are working on your dissertation, try to apply for a graduate scheme. Submit as many applications as possible."
Job hunting is not easy in a pandemic and lockdown. It was challenging, but it is possible to secure your ideal job post-graduation.
Self-growth
"During my time at Bradford, I was a student representative. This helped me enhance my communication, problem-solving, time management and organisational skills.
"My biggest self-growth was the leadership skills I gained as a student rep.
"Outside of studying and working, I love playing football and doing exercises to keep fit. I also enjoy doing voluntary work to support my local community.
"To gain transferable skills, I'm volunteering at the Euro 2020 (June/July 2021) football tournament at Wembley, London.
"I like travelling, meeting new people, and learning alternative approaches."
I attended a few social events organised by the Students’ Union, and the social inclusion was incredible.
