Anabel
MSc Applied Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics
Anabel was a successful IT consultant living in Mexico, but she was keen to advance her career with a UK degree qualification in MSc Applied Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics. She relocated to Bradford to study for a Master’s here and hasn't looked back since.
Now, just a few months after graduating, Anabel is employed as a full-time data manager at Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
This is Anabel’s story.
A future-proof career option
“I could see where the AI market was going.”
"In my work as an IT consultant in Mexico, I could see how quickly the trend for artificially intelligent methods and machine learning was racing globally.
"I have always been good with managing data, but I wanted to learn more about how to apply AI in different settings. Improving my technical skills in these areas increased my chances of getting better employment."
The offering at Bradford really stood out
“I wanted to be part of this change in the world.”
"Artificial intelligence is changing the world, I want to help people and organisations embrace it and use it for good. I looked for training courses in Mexico, but nothing fit my criteria.
"I extended my search to the UK and found that the Bradford MSc specialised in both AI and data in one course, unlike other universities. I liked the fact that I could do it in a year, and I applied for the course to start in October 2021.
"The course has shaped a whole new approach to the professional world for me. I now have all the advanced technical skills that will last throughout my career. I couldn’t get these skills in Mexico as quickly, there it requires at least three years’ study."
My qualification from Bradford will enable me to pioneer changes in the world using data and artificial intelligence.
Hands-on experience
"I had an opportunity to do a placement at university."
"During my placement, my role was to improve the quality of the data, create new reports, and bring new technical solutions to the organisation.
"Following my graduation from university, I’ve now been offered full-time employment. I work as a data manager in a small team that looks after an internationally recognised research programme called Born in Bradford, which is a large birth cohort study based at Bradford Royal Infirmary.
"13,500 pregnant women were recruited to the study between March 2007 and December 2010 and we’re now tracking the lives of their children to find out what keeps families healthy and happy, so we can provide the best services to them in the future."
The University of Bradford gave me a lot of support to secure an internship with the research team of the local hospital's Trust.
My achievements
“I have developed a new AI process.”
"I’ve helped to change the process of how we extract, transform and load data by using programmes I am familiar with from university, for example, Python programming.
"A particular high point was when I proposed and developed a new AI process to match identity data from the research participants’ consent forms. I’m very proud of this machine programming task I did, which relieved a huge pain point for the organisation, and has saved people a lot of admin time."
Final thoughts and advice
“With my new AI skills and knowledge, I have accelerated my career.”
"Getting this job just a few months after finishing my Master’s was a real achievement for me. I never thought I’d do that so fast and wouldn’t have known how to start without the University.
"I feel the world is my oyster now.
"My advice to new students, especially international students, is to take heaps of help from the careers service, your professor, and your peers.
"Sometimes it’s better to ask! And do a placement. Look where it got me."
